Week 30 - Shaaaaark (You're gunna need a bigger boat)

SOLD!

We're gonna need a bigger boat... 'cause next week is SHARK WEEK! That's right ladies and gents, next week is a week-long holiday for men (and some women) where we will park ourselves on the couch and watch hour after hour of shark-related goodness on television, hoping that we will get the chance to see someone get ripped to shreds by our favorite oceanic meat-eater. Be honest. THAT is what you are watching for. (hmmm. according to The Google, there are only about 80 shark attacks reported each year, so the chances that one is caught on camera and will be broadcasted on TV during Shark Week is kinda low. Lame!)

Tune in next week when another Munny will be posted on August 5th. If there is a Munny customization you would like to see, shoot me an e-mail to gbowdler@gmail.com or leave a comment below!

Week 29 - "Cello... is it me you're looking for?"

SOLD!

It's Nostalgia Week here on the Munny A Week 2011 blog. I spent a lot of time this past week thinking about the last 28 years of my life and a lot of fond memories can flooding back into my head.

I was browsing YouTube when I randomly happened upon this video. It made me remember how freaking awesome the cello was and made me miss the years I spent playing it. If you don't know me, then you don't know that I started playing musical instruments at a young age. I want to say that I was 4 or 5 years old when I started to play the violin. At the age of 10 I switched over to the cello. (I was trained using the Suzuki method, which you can read more about here... but to me, it meant I had to play standing up... with proper violin-playing posture. Switching over to cello meant I finally got to sit down.) I played the cello up until I graduated from high school at 18... and haven't touched one since.

There are definitely parts of me now that wish I practiced a bit harder as a child and that I didn't give it up when I came down to college. There were just so many other things I was interested in back then, that practicing on my own often took a back-seat to the hundreds of other activities I was involved in. Maybe I'll pick it up again someday. Hopefully its partially like riding a bike.

The next Munny will be posted on Friday, July 29th. If there is a Munny customization you would like to see, leave a comment below or shoot me an e-mail at gbowdler@gmail.com.

Week 28 - Munny Potter

SOLD!

I think Neil Cicierega (The creator of the Potter Puppet Pals) put it best in his hit YouTube video, The Mysterious Ticking Noise, when he said, "Harry Potter. Harry Potter, Ooh. Harry Potter. Harry Potter, Yeah! Harry Potter. Harry Potter, Ooh. Harry Potter. Harry Potter, That's me!"

I have to admit I'm not much of a Harry Potter fan. I came back to my office after a meeting weeks ago to find, hanging from my Munny a Week shelf in the exact location the July 15th Munny would be placed, a post-it note. On that note read, "July 15th - HARRY POTTER MUNNY!" and had a smiley face with a scar between its eyes. So... as I aim to please... I present to you Munny Potter!

A major shout out goes to my good friend, and co-worker, Melodie (www.rhymeswithstich.com) who made this adorable (err. I mean manly and kickass) Gryffindor scarf for Munny Potter. Isn't it awesome!? You don't have to answer. We already know it's a "YES!"

The next munny will make its debut on Friday, July 22. If there is a Munny customization you would like to see (and you know there is) leave a comment below or shoot me an e-mail to gbowdler@gmail.com Also, feel free to forward this site on to all of your friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, clergy, pets, comeplete strangers on the street, anyone really. I'd surely appreciate it! Thanks and I'll see you next week!

Week 27 - Hotdog!

SOLD!

Congrats to Joey Chestnut!!! 5-time winner of the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest! (62 hotdogs... way to go!)

If you know anything about me, you know that I'm not a huge sports fan (which is ironic, considering I make part of my living working in the sports industry) However, for the past decade, since I discovered competitive eating, I've become a huge fan of the sport*. The IFOCE (International Federation of Competitive Eating) has become my NFL, The Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest held each year on the 4th of July is my Super Bowl and Joey Chestnut is my Aaron Rodgers. (2011 Super Bowl MVP if you are as sports clueless as I am)

I don't know how much you know about the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, but from the year 2001 through 2006, the mustard yellow belt (think of the WWF title belt here) went to a fierce competitor named Takeru Kobayashi of Japan. He was throwing up numbers of hotdogs that had been unheard of. (The winner of 2000 put away 25 hotdogs... the next year Kobayashi doubled it with 50... in 12 minutes.)

It seemed that nobody could beat him... or come even close, until in 2007 a skinny white boy from california went dog for dog with the champion and in the last minute pulled ever so slightly ahead and brought the mustard yellow belt back to American soil for the first time this millennia. He won by 3 hotdogs. (66 hotdogs total!!!) That boy was Joey "Jaws" Chestnut. Since then, Chestnut has defended America's pride (Much like Captain America) by keeping all other nations at bay... at least in terms of hotdog consumption.

The next Munny will be posted on July 15th. It will be magical... i promise. ;) If there is a Munny you would like to see, leave a comment on this, or any, post or shoot me an e-mail to gbowdler@gmail.com.

One last fun fact for you... from 2001 through 2011 there have been exactly 1121.5 hotdogs consumed by just the 1st and 2nd place winners during the competition. Holy Hot Dog!

*Yes. Competitive eating is a sport, as it fits the definition of the word, sport (Use of physical skills or capabilities, as strength, agility, or stamina, often in a competitive nature) Cheerleading and bowling are still up for debate. ;)

The Statue of Munnerty - Behind the Munny

Ladies and Gents! I don't know if you have been doing the math... but, if you ARE counting you realize that Munny #26 marks the exact half-way point of my Munny A Week 2011 project. To be honest, I wasn't sure that I would have made it this far. It seemed like everyone that had tread this path before me had failed (cough cough munnyaweek.com cough cough) I am happy to announce that I am not even close to giving up and with your help can finish this project strong... So, what are you waiting for? Send me those Munny customization ideas already! (gbowdler@gmail.com)

The great Betsy (you may remember her being mentioned in the week 7 blog post) had recently suggested that I pull back the wizard's curtain and reveal the process I go through to bring you one of the weekly Munnys. I thought I'd give it a shot. (What is to follow is not picture heavy... I tend to work fast and loose... so documentation isn't a strong point)

I'm not a huge fan of the accessories I've been receiving with my orders of KidRobot MiniMunnys... I have ordered them in bulk all from the most recent addition and therefore have dozens of the same accessories ranging from fedoras to baseball bats. I haven't found them very inspiring and haven't used them for the most part during this project. However, when I opened up this Munny with my first shipment I knew that I wanted to make a Statue of Liberty inspired Munny... from there it became more of a waiting game for an appropriate week to unleash it... What better week than 4th of July weekend? So, lets get started.

The first step was to affix what I imagine was designed and intended to be some sort of spike mohawk on the Munny sideways. I did this with Loctite Heavy Duty Epoxy (The one with a 5 minute cure time) I've use this epoxy every time I affix something to the Munny that isn't clay. (or clay that has broken off after the initial baking) I've also used this product to simulate glass for the goggles for Pool-side Petey.

When I originally conceptualized making a Statue of Liberty Munny I knew that I wanted to make the torch functional. I knew I would need some sort of lighting system and battery pack to pull it off. In order to make it work, I had to hollow out a path from the hand to the foot so that the light could be outside of the Munny and the battery pack could be hidden inside. You can see, in this picture, the hole in the hand and the hollowed out foot. What you cannot see was that i hollowed out the socket where the detachable hand meets the body.

I used a cheap-o LED book light I purchased from the Dollar Tree for the torch. I removed the casing and fed the wires through the arm and with some rudimentary wire twisting (my soldering iron wasn't working) I completed the circuit through a switch. I then covered the super bright white LED with some of the yellow plastic from the book light. (You can see the result of this electrical work in the picture below)

As far as working with clay goes, I don't have very much to say. I add clay until the object looks like what I think it is suppose to. haha. I use two, sometimes three types of Sculpey brand modeling clay when working on Munnys: Super Sculpey (stays soft, maybe too soft, before baking. I used it for bulk areas and anything that doesn't need to be super detailed... for this project I used this for the draping gown and the hair) PREMO! Sculpey (a bit firmer, I use this for all faces and more detailed work... for this project, the face, torch and book) The third product I sometimes use is Super Sculpey Firm (this stays rediculously firm even while sculpting. I use it on thin objects that would surely break if I used anything else. an example would be the scarf blowing in the wind on "Fly me to the Munn.") In the image below you can see the lighting system as well as the clay-covered Munny out of the oven and sanded a bit.

Once all of the clay has been sculpted and baked, it is time for priming and painting. Normally I prime in white and then start painting color, but seeing this Munny was going to all be in the same color range, I decided to prime it in the bluish green you see below. I use some combination of FolkArt, Apple Barrel and Liquitex Basics brand acrylic paint for my Munny work. Its relatively cheap and seeing art stores have been closing in Tampa like it is in style, they are relatively accessible at big chain retail stores with craft departments. So, below is the primed Munny with all of the torch guts tucked up inside the leg.

Tah Dah! Here is the finished Munny. This is after some detailed painting to add fake hi-lights, shadows, and blackened windows. I then covered the whole thing with Delta Ceramcoat's Matte Varnish to protect the paint and put my McDonalds ice cream cone making experience to good use creating the torch flame using hot glue. and there you go... a finished Munny!

Oh yeah... Did I mention it lights up!? ;)

Well, there you go folks. Week 26's Statue of Munnerty.

Week 26 - Statue of Munnerty

SOLD!

It's 4th of July weekend and you know what that means!!! Fireworks! Grillin'! MACARONI SALAD!!! (man, I love me some macaroni salad) and, I'm sure, some other things that don't involve food or shooting explosives into the sky. (errr... I mean, trying to protect our crops from birds and insects... am I right people who sell fireworks out of tents? wink wink)

This week's Munny is more than meets the eye! No, it doesn't transform, it lights up. Seriously! The torch of the Statue of Munnerty lights up! How cool is that? (don't just trust me... check out the picture below)

You know, I think I have actually been inside the Statue of Liberty. I couldn't have been very old, but I have a very foggy memory of climbing up a heck of a lot of winding stairs to the top of the crown. I guess I'll have to ask my parents about THAT one.

Edit: a quote from an e-mail from my father minutes after posting this post - "OMG...you scared me almost speechless. As we were on our way back down you kept walking out of the stairwell onto these platforms where falling to the base of the statue was only prevented by a slack chain." He also mentioned that he was carrying my cousin in a backpack... and she is only 2 years younger than me, so I couldn't have been more than 4 or 5 years old.

The next Munny is due on Friday, July 8... but I'm going to be in the nations capitol for a work conference... so you can bet that it will be a little bit early. You're excited... admit it! If you have an idea for a Munny customization YOU would like to see, leave a comment below or shoot me an e-mail to gbowdler@gmail.com.
